Hello, honey friends! Today is extra sweet because I’m going to talk about using honey in my favorite Filipino desserts. Whenever I feel like having something special, I try to see if I can swap sugar with honey or drizzle some on top. It gives the dessert a new flavor that I love sharing with my family!
1. Honey Bibingka
- How I Do It:
- I follow my usual bibingka recipe, but instead of regular sugar, I use a bit less honey to sweeten the batter.
- After baking, I brush a little more honey on top to give it a golden shine.
- What I Love:
The honey adds a light, floral taste that goes nicely with the soft, spongy bibingka. It also makes the top just a bit sticky—delicious!
2. Honey Puto
- How I Do It:
- When I mix the puto batter, I reduce the sugar and replace it with some honey.
- I steam the puto as usual.
- What I Love:
The little puto cups come out fluffy, with a sweet aroma from the honey. I like to top them with a small slice of cheese for that salty-sweet combo.
3. Honey Turon Drizzle
- How I Do It:
- I wrap slices of banana (and sometimes jackfruit) in lumpia wrappers.
- I fry them until they’re crispy.
- Instead of rolling them in sugar, I drizzle honey on top while they’re still warm.
- What I Love:
The honey makes the outside crispy and shiny, and it tastes so good with the soft banana inside. It’s like a sweet hug in every bite!
4. Halo-Halo with Honey
- How I Do It:
- I prepare my halo-halo layers: sweet beans, jellies, fruits, and crushed ice.
- Instead of spoonfuls of sugar, I pour a bit of honey over the top.
- I mix everything up and add evaporated milk.
- What I Love:
The honey mixes with the milk and makes everything smooth and sweet without feeling too heavy.
My Sweet Tip
When I’m baking or cooking with honey, I try to lower the heat a little or shorten the cooking time, so the honey doesn’t burn. This keeps the dessert tasting sweet and not bitter.
I hope these ideas inspire you to experiment in the kitchen! Honey adds a special twist to our classic Filipino desserts, and it also supports our local beekeepers. What could be better than a treat that’s both delicious and kind to our hardworking bees?
Thanks for joining me on Day 15! Tomorrow, I’ll share even more honey goodness. Until then, stay sweet and enjoy your honey-infused creations!
P.S. Have you tried adding honey to your favorite Filipino dessert? Tell me which one and how it turned out!
