Hello again, honey lovers! Today, I want to share something important: how I figure out if the honey I’m buying is pure and real. When I first started learning about honey, I found out there are some fakes out there—that’s a bummer, right? So here are a few tips I use to make sure I’m getting the good stuff.
1. Look at the Label
Whenever I pick up a jar of honey, I check the label for words like “100% pure honey” or “raw honey.” I also see if they list where it comes from. For example, it might say “Wild Forest Honey from Palawan” or “Coconut Honey from Quezon.” If I know exactly where it’s from, it makes me feel better about buying it.
2. A Simple Water Test
A friend taught me a super easy test:
- I take a spoon of honey.
- I drop it into a glass of water.
- If the honey stays together at the bottom of the glass, it’s likely pure.
- If it dissolves right away or mixes quickly, it might have extra sugar added.
Of course, this is just a quick check and not always perfect, but it’s a fun experiment!
3. Taste and Smell
I notice that real honey often has a fresh, floral smell—like flowers, fruits, or even a bit of the forest. When I taste it, it feels thick and smooth. If honey tastes too sugary or watery, I become a little suspicious. Trust your nose and tongue!
4. Crystallization Clues
Sometimes pure honey crystallizes over time. Crystals can look like tiny sugar bits inside the honey. This is normal and a sign that your honey is raw or hasn’t been overly heated. If your honey crystallizes, don’t worry—it can still taste great! You can place the jar in warm water to soften it again.
5. Buy From Trusted Sellers
Finally, one of the best ways I find real honey is by buying from people I trust. I ask friends for recommendations, or I visit local farms and markets. Many Filipino beekeepers love sharing their honey stories, and I learn a lot about how they take care of their bees.
My Honey Assurance
So, next time you’re shopping for honey—whether at a market in Manila or a roadside store in Cebu—keep these tips in mind. When I take those extra steps, I feel good knowing that the honey in my kitchen is pure and made with care.
Thank you for reading my Day 3 post! Stay tuned tomorrow for more sweet stories and helpful tips. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to sip my ginger tea sweetened with some real local honey.
P.S. Do you have your own way of checking if honey is real? I’d love to hear your tips and experiences!
