Keping My Honey Safe in the Philippine Heat

Hello again, honey buddies! Today, I want to talk about something we deal with all the time here in the Philippines: our hot and humid weather. Storing honey the right way can be tricky, but I’ve learned a few tips that help me make sure my honey stays fresh and delicious.

1. Cool and Dry Is Best

When I get a new jar of honey, I keep it in a cool, dry place, like a kitchen cupboard. If your home gets really warm, try to find a spot away from direct sunlight. The sun’s heat can make honey lose some of its special flavor and goodness.

2. Sealed Tight

After I use my honey, I always make sure the lid is closed tightly. If air or moisture gets inside, it can make the honey go bad faster. A tightly sealed jar also keeps tiny ants away—those little critters love sweet things as much as we do!

3. Watch Out for Moisture

In a humid place like the Philippines, moisture is everywhere. If water sneaks into your jar, the honey might start to ferment (which means it can get bubbly or taste sour). To avoid this, I never dip a wet spoon into my honey. I always wipe my spoon dry first.

4. Room Temperature Is Just Fine

Some people ask if they should keep honey in the fridge. Personally, I prefer to keep my honey at room temperature. Storing it in the fridge can make it thicker or even cause it to crystallize faster. But if you do put your honey in the fridge, don’t worry—it’s still okay to eat, just maybe a bit harder to scoop.

5. What if It Crystallizes?

If your honey crystallizes (gets tiny sugar crystals inside), don’t panic! It’s still good to eat. You can enjoy it as-is (it’s a bit crunchy, which I kind of like) or place the jar in a bowl of warm water until it melts back to a smooth texture.

Staying Sweet

Living in the Philippines means dealing with sticky weather, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying my honey every day. By keeping your jar in a cool, dry place and making sure it’s sealed tight, your honey can stay fresh for a very long time.

Thanks for joining me on Day 6! Tomorrow, we’ll get to know more about the hardworking Filipino beekeepers who make our sweet treats possible. Stay tuned, and stay sweet!

P.S. Have you ever had ants sneak into your honey jar? I’d love to hear your funny (or frustrating) stories about honey storage!
